1. Elements of Image Interpretation
Image interpretation is the process of identifying and analyzing objects or features in aerial photographs or satellite images using their visual characteristics.
Key Elements :
Tone/Colour: Brightness or colour of an object.
Texture: Smoothness or roughness of a surface.
Shape: Geometric form of an object.
Size: Dimensions of the object.
Pattern: Spatial arrangement or repetition of features.
Shadow: Helps determine the height and shape of objects.
Site: Physical location or topographic position.
Association: Relationship with nearby features.
2. Collateral Information
Definition:
Collateral information is the supporting information used along with photographs or satellite images to improve interpretation accuracy.
Examples :
Topographic maps
GIS data
Field survey (Ground truth)
Historical records
Climatic and geological data
GPS observations
Concept:
Combining image data with additional information reduces interpretation errors.
3. Convergence of Evidence
Convergence of evidence is the process of combining multiple image interpretation elements and collateral information to reach a reliable conclusion.
Concept:
Instead of relying on a single clue, the interpreter uses several pieces of evidence (tone, texture, shape, pattern, association, field data, etc.) to correctly identify an object.
4. Multi-Concept in Photogrammetry
The Multi-Concept approach means that no single characteristic is sufficient for accurate image interpretation. Multiple concepts and data sources are integrated for better analysis.
